Fauna

In Park Vaeshartelt

Vaeshartelt Park is not only beautiful for walking, but also home to various animals. From grazing sheep to waterfowl by the pond, there is always something fun to see for young and old.

Sheep, Geese, Birds and much more...”

Are you coming to admire them?

Sheep from Daalhoeve

The sheep from Daalhoeve Farm roam the park . They graze the grass in a natural way, keeping the park neat and green. The sheep make the park lively and are a fun attraction for visitors, especially during the lambing season.

Dutch Landrace Goats from Veldwijs

Dutch Landgoats from the Veldwijs initiative roam here , an old and special breed that has been present in our landscape for centuries. These goats are known for their strong character, curiosity, and their ability to live in natural areas.

Domestic goats help keep the landscape open and healthy. They eat blackberries, saplings, and rough vegetation. As a result, flowers, herbs, and insects have room to grow again.

The Dutch Landgoat is a rare breed kept to preserve genetic diversity and cultural heritage. By allowing these animals to graze here, this special breed remains visible in the landscape.

Walk quietly past the meadow and watch how these curious animals spend their day.

See you at the goats!

Bee

Here stand beehives belonging to our beekeeper, where honeybees are busy collecting nectar and pollen from the flowers on the estate. Bees play a huge role in nature. They pollinate flowers, fruit trees, and vegetables. Without bees, many plants and food crops would not be able to grow.

The bees collect nectar from thousands of flowers and bring it to the hive. There, the nectar is converted into honey – a pure natural product that carries the flavors of the season.

The bees benefit from the flowers, orchards, and herbs on the estate. At the same time, they ensure that these plants can reproduce.

Take a moment to look and listen – you might hear the soft buzzing of thousands of working bees.

Falcon box & Owl box

A Little Owl nest box and a Falcon nest box have been hanging on our grounds for some time. The Little Owl nest box was installed thanks to the Natuurrijk Limburg initiative , which is dedicated to the protection of this special owl species. With this box, we hope to offer Little Owls a safe place to nest and thus contribute to the conservation of the species in our region.

In addition, there is also a falcon box, intended for the kestrel, for example. By creating nesting opportunities for these birds of prey, we are happy to contribute to greater biodiversity in our surroundings. It remains exciting every time to see if the boxes get new inhabitants!

Birds

Walking through a park has never been so pleasant with all that beautiful song around you. From the great spotted woodpecker and blackbirds, and you might even spot a kingfisher by the Grand Canal. The water located near the Sterrenbos.

geese

At the pond in Vaeshartelt Park, you are guaranteed to see Canada geese. These birds are grey with a black head and a white chin. They swim in the water, walk along the banks, and forage in the grass. The geese bring life to the pond and are a fine example of waterbirds in the park.

Don't be surprised if you come across a 'souvenir' of theirs every now and then… geese just poop everywhere!

Egyptian goose

The Egyptian goose breeds in the trees of Vaeshartelt. Contrary to what the name Egyptian goose suggests, the Egyptian goose belongs to the duck species.

Bevers

Beavers, a special inhabitant of our area, can be found on the Vaeshartelt estate. To protect the trees on our grounds from gnawing damage, we have therefore placed special jute sacks near various trees. This allows the beavers to go about their business safely, while hopefully our trees remain preserved for everyone to enjoy.

But there is even more to discover!
